My
sister-in-law turned me on to driving to Monterrey through Colombia, a
crossing just west of Laredo. Getting to Colombia is a snap thanks to
the new Camino Colombia toll road from I-35 to Colombia. Two dollars
will save you a lot of aggravation and long lines at Customs in Nuevo
Laredo, too. After you cross into Mexico you'll have to double back to
Nuevo Laredo to get on the main highway. But you'll be on the outer
loop freeway and avoid the traffic... and the drug lords.
